Urokinase plasminogen activator surface receptor (uPAR, UniProtKB Q03405), also known as monocyte activation antigen Mo3, PLAUR and CD87, is a GPI-anchored protein that binds the urokinase-type Plasminogen Activator (uPA). uPAR is a 335 amino acid large GPI-anchored protein and functions by localizing and enhancing the uPA-mediated conversion of plasminogen to plasmin. In addition, uPAR can interact with vitronectin and integrins and hereby regulate cell adhesion. Ligand binding to uPAR results in downstream signal transduction towards tyrosine kinases, gene expression, cell adhesion, and chemotaxis. uPAR is expressed a large number of cancers and is linked to tumor metastasis and invasion.
