Human serum albumin (HSA) is the most abundant protein in human blood
plasma. Synthesized by the liver, it maintains osmotic pressure, transports
hormones, fatty acids, drugs, and other molecules, and acts as an
antioxidant. It plays a crucial role in fluid balance, nutrient distribution, and
overall physiological homeostasis. HSA is widely used for the half-life
extension of therapeutic molecules because of its naturally prolonged
circulation in the bloodstream, with a serum half-life of approximately 19
days. This extended circulation results primarily from Fc receptor (FcRn)
mediated recycling, which protects albumin from lysosomal degradation.
